Map Data and Usage Terms and Conditions

Important information regarding mapping facilities and data in this site.

Please note: As this is currently a pre-release preview of SpeciesDB, it is strongly advised against using any materials for reference or republishing. Not all information has been sufficiently validated as yet and inaccuracies may remain.

Map displays are generated using the Google Maps JavaScript API V3. Refer to http://code.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/javascript/ External site for further information. For information on licensing and reusing maps generated by the Google Maps APIs, please refer to http://www.google.com/intl/en-US_US/help/terms_maps.html External site for details.

Map point data displayed on this site is a combination of several data sources. Primary data is from:

  • Australia's Virtual Herbarium (AVH) - http://chah.gov.au/avh/ External site

Specimen data reproduced from Australia's Virtual Herbarium with permission of the Council of Heads of Australasian Herbaria Inc.

Data was extracted from publically accessible records during November, 2010. Users with appropriate credentials may have access to additional data via the AVH site. Data listed on this site is an extract only, it is in no way linked to live data from AVH. Data on this site should be validated against data on the AVH site to ensure the latest information is used.

Please refer to Australia's Virtual Herbarium Data use agreement for terms and conditions associated with the use of AVH's dataset: http://chah.gov.au/avh/datauseagreement_public.jsp External site

Data points derived from AVH data when used throughout this site are prefixed by AVH to distinguish them from datasets from other providers.

  • Atlas of Living Australia (ALA) - http://www.ala.org.au/ External site

Please refer to the Atlas of Living Australia Terms of Use for terms and conditions associated with the use of ALA's dataset: http://www.ala.org.au/about/terms-of-use/ External site

Data points derived from AVH data when used throughout this site are prefixed by ALA to distinguish them from datasets from other providers.

As part of the dataset from the Atlas of Living Australia, additional subsets of data include:

  • Atlas of NSW Wildlife - http://wildlifeatlas.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/wildlifeatlas/watlas.jsp External site

Run by the NSW Department of Environment, Climate Change, and Water representing the State of New South Wales (DECCW). This dataset is Copyright NSW Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water. Copyright and usage information is available at: http://wildlifeatlas.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/wildlifeatlas/about.jsp External site

Atlas of NSW Wildlife data is included as part of the Atlas of Living Australia dataset and as such is not currently indexed separately. When referenced throughout this site, relevant entries are prefixed ALA to distinguish them as part of the larger Atlas of Living Australia dataset.

Individual records within the ALA dataset are tagged with a dataprovider of NSW Department of Environment, Climate Change, and Water representing the State of New South Wales (DECCW) and dataresource of DECCW Atlas of NSW Wildlife.

  • South Australia Flora Observations - http://www.environment.sa.gov.au/Home External site

This dataset is managed by the South Australia, Department of Environment and Natural Resources. Refer to http://www.flora.sa.gov.au/about.html External site for specific terms and conditions relating to usage of this dataset.

South Australia Flora Observations data is included as part of the Atlas of Living Australia dataset and as such is not currently indexed separately. When referenced throughout this site, relevant entries are prefixed ALA to distinguish as part of the larger Atlas of Living Australia dataset. Individual records within the ALA dataset are tagged with a dataprovider of South Australia, Department of Environment and Natural Resources and dataresource of South Australia Flora Observations.

In addition to species observation datasets, information used with maps on this site has been drawn from some additional sources.

Notes:

Significant overlap existed between the AVH and ALA datasets. Given AVH was the source of much of the data in ALA, such overlap was to be expected. The available AVH dataset seems to be a later than the dataset ALA is based on. As such, AVH records where considered to be authoritative where duplicate entries existed. To the extent possible, duplicate records were removed from the combined AVH and ALA datasets, matching on characteristics such as taxon name, record ID, accession numbers, dates and locales. Duplicates may still exist. Please be sure to review relevant data before relying on it.

Most, if not all, states and territories, generally maintain some records of species occurrences for Australian native plants, often in addition to any records kept by the State's Herbarium. Currently, most regions only release limited information from such species registers. At this point, this site only includes such information from New South Wales, as part of the Atlas of NSW Wildlife dataset within the Atlas of Living Australia dataset, and South Australia, as part of the South Australia Flora Observations dataset as part of the Atlas of Living Australia dataset. It must be noted that as a result of the larger volume of data available with the extra New South Wales and South Australian datasets, in addition to State Herbarium records, maps of these regions may overly reflect actual species records for individual species, as compared to other states where lesser data is readily available.
